Kids’ Night on Broadway Returns to Hershey Theatre for Cinderella

(UPDATE: As of January 14, 2016, this promotion is sold out. However, regular tickets remain for all performances.)

Kids’ Night on Broadway is a year-round national audience development program of The Broadway League, the national trade association of the Broadway industry, created to introduce kids and young adults to the magical world of theatrical entertainment. Hershey Theatre is proud to participate on Wednesday, January 27, when Cinderella visits town.

On Kids’ Night on Broadway, kids ages 18 and under can get one FREE ticket to Cinderella when accompanied by one full-paying adult (at select price levels). Tickets are available at the Hershey Theatre Box Office, by phone at 717-534-3405 and online at www.HersheyEntertainment.com or www.TicketMaster.com

The night will be festive with kid-friendly activities and entertainment available in the lower lobby of Hershey Theatre, starting at 6:30 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Kids’ Night on Broadway was created in 1996 by the League and Theatre Development Fund and has welcomed young people to Broadway shows in New York and on tour across the U.S. ever since.

With its fresh new take on the beloved tale of a young woman who is transformed from a chambermaid into a princess, this hilarious and romantic Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella combines the story's classic elements – glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball – along with some surprising twists. More than just a pretty face with the right shoe size, this Cinderella is a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting. She is a spirited young woman with savvy and soul who doesn't let her rags or her gowns trip her up in her quest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to escape the drudgery of her work at home and instead work to make the world a better place. She not only fights for her own dreams, but forces the prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too.

'Matilda the Musical' at Hershey Theatre is a Rare Gem of a Production

Let's start with the bad news: You only have a few chances left to see Matilda the Musical at Hershey Theatre.

The good news? You still have a few chances left to see Matilda the Musical at Hershey Theatre!!

The first time I saw Matilda the Musical was on Broadway back in January, and I fell in love with it. I loved the story, the acting, the music, the set, everything. So when I found out that this amazing piece of theatre was coming to Hershey Theatre, I could barely contain my excitement (ok, I couldn't contain it...I jumped up and down and screamed like I just won $10 tickets to see Hamilton).

Matilda the Musical at Hershey Theatre is just as incredible as I remember from seeing it in NYC. The story follows a smart little girl, Matilda, who doesn't have the kindest of parents. Mrs. Wormwood is too focused on her appearance and her dancing career to be bothered with a daughter. Mr. Wormwood is busy scamming people. And both parents much prefer their son, Michael, who mindlessly stares at a TV all day, to their intellectual and (mostly) well-behaved daughter. I'm far from the perfect parent, but these parents make me look like mom of the year!

When Matilda starts school, she befriends her kind teacher, Miss Honey. Miss Honey recognizes that Matilda is special and is determined to help her succeed. But the brute of a headmaster, Miss Trunchbull, has different plans for Matilda (and all the other children for that matter).

There are so many great things to say about this show. Let's start with the cast. The cast is made up of mostly children, and these kids are outstanding. They sing and dance their hearts out, with a seemingly endless supply of energy. Everyone from Gabby Gutierrez in the title role, to Evan Gray as the cake-stealing Bruce, to Charlie Kersh as Matilda's self-proclaimed best friend Lavender does an outstanding job from beginning to end. The adult cast members are equally as talented. In the role of Miss Trunchbull, Bryce Ryness steals the show at times, proving that his aerial acrobatics are almost as good as his acting. Quinn Mattfeld and Cassie Silva are perfectly obnoxious in their roles as Matilda's mother and father. And Jennifer Blood as Miss Honey has a voice that's as sweet as her character's name.

The music by Tim Minchin is another highlight of the show. It provides a perfect blend of power rock songs like "Revolting Children," sweet melodies like "My House," and upbeat childish tunes like "Naughty." This kind of score wouldn't work with a lot of shows, but it's absolutely perfect for this one! The lyrics in "School Song" are nothing short of genius, and the props and choreography that are incorporated into the set during this number are just as brilliant.

And speaking of the set, let me just say WOW. This set is one of the most impressive sets I've ever seen in a show, setting the tone of the show before it even starts. The set is filled with letters, which resemble scrabble letters, only they almost give the feel of being in another world. Throughout the show, keep an eye out for the different words that are subtly spelled, like "MATILDA" and "QUIET." The set is constantly changing. One minute you can be in the school, and before you know it you're in Matilda's bedroom.

Another thing that's so great about Matilda is that it's perfect for both kids and adults. My boys (ages 5 and 7) were just as excited as I was to see it a second time. It's full of non-stop action and suspense that will easily hold kids' attention while entertaining adults as well. And the story is one that is easy for kids to follow but has much deeper content that adults can appreciate.

This is one of the rare shows where I enjoy the second act more than the first (though both are incredible!). It's kind of like enjoying a sequel better than the original - it doesn't happen very often. But this show just keeps getting better and better, and just when you think it can't get any better, it does! Some of my favorite parts of the show take place in the second act, including the choreography during the swing song ("When I Grow Up") and the chalkboard scene near the end (I still can't figure out how they do it!). I also love the twist that is revealed in Matilda's story during the second act, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet!

Matilda the Musical at Hershey Theatre is a rare gem of a production that is full of energy, talent, and magic. I feel like I could talk all day about how magnificent this production is and it still wouldn't accurately portray the brilliance of it. It's just something you have to experience for yourself!

Fortunately you still have a few chances left to see this show, and I highly recommend that you do. It's not often that a show of this caliber comes to our area, so take advantage of it before it's gone! Matilda the Musical plays at Hershey Theatre from November 10-15. Carlisle Theatre Company's 'Hairspray' Heats Up a Chilly Fall Day

Outside the Carlisle Theatre, the leaves on the trees are changing colors, people are carrying around pumpkin-spiced food and drinks, and the air is cooling off. But inside the theatre, things are heating up with the bright colors of the 60s, and dancing that's just as vibrant, in Carlisle Theatre Company's production of Hairspray.

Plump teenager Tracy Turnblad has big hair and even bigger dreams, and she doesn't let her size, her detention, or even her own mother stand in her way of auditioning for the opportunity of a lifetime: The chance to dance on the Corny Collins Show. When she surprisingly ends up on the show, she sets her sights even higher as she aims to integrate blacks into the show on a regular basis instead of just on "Negro Day," which is only one day a month. While Hairspray is a fun and upbeat show from beginning to end, it also successfully manages to present the more serious issue of racism in the 1960s, making the colors of black and white just as much a part of the show as the bright colors.

Through her journey on the Corny Collins Show, Tracy (played by Aimeebeth Davis) connects with various characters, including teen heartthrob Link Larkin (played by Greg Athanasatos); lovable dancer Seaweed J. Stubbs (played by Jeremy Patterson), his little sister Little Inez (played by Annalise Prentiss), and his soulful mother, Motormouth Maybelle (played by Gabrielle Dixon), who is the host of Negro Day on the Corny Collins Show; and lying, cheating, scheming, fame-obsessed mother/daughter team Velma and Amber Von Tussle (played by Lindsay Bretz and Hillary Miller). Tracy's best friend Penny (played by Carly Lafferty) is there to support her every step of the way, and Tracy's mother Edna (played by Ryan Boyles), while initially against her daughter auditioning, quickly becomes one of her biggest supporters.

Dixon's passionate performance was one to note, as she had her own cheering section with a handful of people who gave standing ovations after each of her songs. Boyles also had a memorable performance, perfectly executing his role while sporting nightgowns, dresses, heels, and even a red feather boa. And the smooth dancing skills of Patterson are worth a mention as well.

The score (by Marc Shaiman) features plenty of catchy tunes, from the opening "Good Morning Baltimore" to the closing "You Can't Stop the Beat," and the 36-member cast wastes no time showcasing top-notch dancing and choreography. While the voices in the show are good, the energetic dancing takes center stage. That the talented cast manages to sing while enthusiastically executing the non-stop dancing is a big part of what makes this show so spectacular. The 10-member orchestra has no trouble pumping out the fast-paced music, which only enhances the energy of the performance. And the costumes, sets, and lighting provide plenty of bright color to round out the production.

Carlisle Theatre Company's Hairspray is a fun, upbeat, and impressive production that heats up a chilly fall day better than any pumpkin-spiced latte ever could. Audiences of any age can enjoy this family-friendly performance filled with quality music, dancing, humor, and yes, hairspray.

Hairspray runs at Carlisle Theatre through October 18. For additional details and ticket information, please visit www.carlisletheatrecompany.com/.

Dutch Apple will Present New Installment of the Church Basement Ladies

The all new installment of the Church Basement Ladies series of musical comedies, A Mighty Fortress Is Our Basement, will be presented at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from September 24 – November 7, 2015. The popular series began at the Plymouth Playhouse in Minneapolis with the first installment, Church Basement Ladies, in 2005. Its sequel, A Second Helping, The Church Basement Ladies Sequel, and the Christmas Musical, Away In The Basement, A Church Basement Ladies Christmas, have been seen in venues coast to coast to cheering, sold-out crowds.

In the latest installment, these “bulwarks never failing” are at it again. The year is 1960, and a reformation is underway. With a new crop of Confirmands, Beverly, the youngest of the bunch played by Sarah Cammarata, dons her first pair of high heels for her confirmation ceremony. Mrs. Snustad, the matriarch of the kitchen played by Diana Wilde, wins top honors at the County Fair for her “Grand Champion” pickles. Mavis, the able-bodied farm wife played by Shannon Connolly, must find a way to deal with the new “Super Highway” that cuts through her farm. Karin, the real homemaker of the kitchen played by Alison Nusbaum, finds new freedom behind the wheel of her husband’s pickup truck and must reconcile a new world of change for her daughter, Beverly. Pastor, played by Greg Eiden and who has always found strength and solace in the church basement, has found new love and announces his impending nuptials. The Church Basement Ladies are once again required to face change head-on. Against the changing tide, these pillars of the church stand strong in their faith and in their friendships with more crazy antics, more great new songs and more lessons reluctantly learned.

With all new music by composer Drew Jansen who wrote the music and lyrics for the past Church Basement Ladies installments and script by sketch comedy writer, Greta Grosch, who also penned the sequel and the Christmas version, A Mighty Fortress Is Our Basement continues to be inspired by the writings of author/humorists Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson, including the best-seller Growing Up Lutheran.

Audiences from coast to coast have fallen in love with these residents of the church basement, and all agree that each new installment gets better and better. What’s more, you do not have to have seen past installments in order to know what’s going on!

Dutch Apple is excited to have Curt Wollan, the Artistic Director of the Plymouth Playhouse in Minneapolis, return to his role as director. His company, Troupe America Inc., has produced all five installments of Church Basement Ladies there. Wollan has produced and directed over 200 national tours including The Odd Couple with M.A.S.H stars Jamie Farr and William Christopher. Last season, Wollan had the honor of directing Dolly Parton in her family memoir musical, My People. Working alongside Wollan will be choreographer Samantha Hewes Cramer whose work was recently seen at Dutch Apple in the beautiful West Side Story and previously in Crazy For You.

Church Basement Ladies: A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement will be at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre September 24 through November 7, 2015. Ticket prices range from $49 to $56 for meal and show with a special rate for groups of 16 or more. A limited number of show-only seats are available for $34. Call 717-898-1900 to make a reservation or order your tickets online at DutchApple.com.

4 Reasons Why You Should Go See 'Once' at Hershey Theatre

When I first saw the musical Once a few years ago on Broadway, it quickly joined my "Top 5" list of all-time favorite musicals. Seeing Once at Hershey Theatre only reaffirmed my love for this show. There's a reason (actually quite a few reasons) why this show won eight (EIGHT!!!) Tony Awards. While I could easily list 20 great things about Once, here are four of the main reasons why I fell in love this show (and why I think you will too!):

1. The story
"Guy" (played by Stuart Ward) is a musician from Dublin who is just about to call it quits, when "Girl" (played by Dani de Waal) unexpectedly comes along and inspires him to keep on going. She has faith in his music, and he has faith in her. While it may sound like the classic tale of boy meets girl, this love story takes some unexpected turns. Even the ending can be interpreted as happy or unhappy, depending on how you look at it.

2. The music
With the setting of the show in Ireland, much of the music has more of a folk sound to it as opposed to the typical show tune style found in many musicals. With a simply beautiful and at times haunting score, it's easy to see why Once won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2013. Adding to the beautiful music is the fact that the actors are also the musicians. The song "Gold" is one of my favorite songs from a musical ever, and it proves how talented the whole ensemble really is. The first performance of the song at the end of Act One is one that I could watch over and over, but equally good is the A capella reprise in Act Two. "Falling Slowly" is another favorite of mine from the show and really showcases the musical talent of Ward and deWall.

3. The humor
The first time I saw Once, I was caught completely off guard by how genuinely funny it is. Seeing it again, I found myself laughing just as much as I did the first time. While the story is ultimately a complicated love story, funny moments are sprinkled throughout the whole show at just the right moments.

4. The pre-show experience
I absolutely love when musicals do creative things to enhance the audience's experience, which is maybe one of the reasons why I was so quick to fall in love this show. Much of the show takes place in a bar, which happens to be open to the audience upon arriving to the theatre. Simply walk up on stage to purchase a glass of wine, bottle of beer, or even just a water. How cool is that?! You can't take pictures or touch anything, but just being up on the stage and seeing the set up close is an amazing and unique experience. There are a few other surprises that I won't give away, but I'll offer the following tip: If you're up for the full experience, try to be on the stage about five minutes before the start of the show.

With a genuine story told through top-notch performing, beautiful music, and unexpected humor, Once is easily one of the best musicals to come to Hershey Theatre. There's no reason why every seat in the house shouldn't be filled for the next few days!

Once plays at Hershey Theatre through September 20. For more information and tickets, please visit www.hersheytheatre.com.

Who Am I?

I first saw Cats when I was about 6 years old, and do you know what I remember about my first time seeing it? I remember that the white cat was my favorite, and I remember that at intermission Old Deuteronomy stayed on stage and signed Playbills. I distinctly remember my mom gently nudging me out of my seat, telling me to take my Playbill up on stage and give it to Old Deuteronomy. I was nervous as heck and had no idea why my mom wanted me to do this crazy thing, but I did it anyway, and now I have a signed Playbill and an incredible memory to go along with it.

Musical theatre has always been a part of my life, but over the past decade or so things have changed for me. Theatre has gone from being a part of my life to being my passion, bordering on an obsession. I've gone from enjoying musical theatre to feeling a need to be a part of it.

My biggest struggle over the past few years has been trying to figure out where I fit in with the crazy and unpredictable world that is theatre. I know that I'm not an actor. I don't feel qualified to be a director. And while producing is definitely a long-term goal of mine, it's not really where I feel that I fit right now. I know that I want to be involved in the creative development side of musicals, but I'm not a writer or composer. So who am I?

I've done so much research into different theatre jobs that I feel qualified to teach a course on the subject. But with all the different jobs there are in theatre, I can't say that I've found one that really fits me. Dramaturg is the closest actual theatre "job" that sort-of-kind-of-in-a-way-maybe fits who I am, but it still doesn't feel completely right.

After all this research, I finally realized why I can't find a job that fits me. It's because it doesn't exist. At least not yet.

I'm not sure why I remember the white cat from Cats, but I definitely know why I remember going on stage with Old Deuteronomy. It's because it was a little something extra that made me feel connected to the show. And this is what I want to do for musicals. I want to create that connection between the audience and the show.

There is definitely a place for this kind of service in theatre, especially in today's world where everyone wants to feel connected to everything. In fact, there are already plenty of musicals making these kinds of connections, and it's paying off big time for them. Shows like Once, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and Hamilton are all using various forms of audience engagement, but the thing is, the ideas all come from different places. A director might come up with an idea; the writer might come up with an idea; an ad agency might come up with an idea. But in all my research I couldn't find any kind of job that specifically specializes in this. So I decided to create one!

While a quick Google search of "audience engagement in theatre" produces some intriguing results, including some people who are in the same boat as I am, it only proves that this is just the beginning for this new trend. I've decided to seize this opportunity to create the perfect theatre job for me. So please say hello to the new audience engagement specialist for musicals!

As an audience engagement specialist, I will be helping musicals find creative ways to connect with their audiences. While it's currently a very limited market, it's also a quickly growing market, making now the perfect time to throw myself into it. More and more musicals are starting to navigate the world of audience engagement, and I want to be there to help them. It's a perfect combination of my lifelong theatre passion, my 15 years of marketing experience, and several years of theatre production experience, and I can't wait to get started! As a matter of fact, I've already gotten started on a few things, which leads me to some changes that will be taking place with Row L Seat 1.

For starters, I'll be shifting the focus of Row L Seat 1 to focusing exclusively on audience engagement. In just a few days, when you go to www.RowLSeat1.com, you'll see a very different website. The new website will reflect these changes and the updated focus of Row L Seat 1. I'll also be updating the Row L Seat 1 Facebook and Twitter sites to reflect this new focus as well.

So what does all this mean for Row L Seat 1 in the Central PA area? Don't worry - it's not going anywhere anytime soon! I still love supporting theatre in this area, and I'm happy to help promote the amazing theatres and actors we have however I can. Row L Seat 1 started as a blog, and I plan to keep the Row L Seat 1 blog active by continuing to publish news, events, and reviews related to theatre in Harrisburg and the surrounding area. The website that you're on right now will remain unchanged and dedicated exclusively to Central PA theatre. The only difference is that from now on the link to get here will be www.RowLSeat1.blogspot.com. I also created a brand new Facebook page specifically for the blog, which you can find (and like!) at www.facebook.com/theatrekim. I'll be blogging under the pseudonym "Theatre Kim," which is were the Facebook page name came from.

The reason for these changes is simply because I now have two very different focuses. Most people who are interested in Central PA theatre probably don't have an interest in my audience engagement services, and vice versa.

I realize that the coming weeks might cause a little bit of confusion as this transition to break Row L Seat 1 into two very different focuses occurs. I promise it's for the better, and I also promise to try to make the transition as seamless as possible. As always, thanks to everyone who reads or follows Row L Seat 1, either the "old" one or the "new" one, or better yet both. Your support means so much to me, and I look forward to sharing my new adventures with you soon!

Dutch Apple's 'West Side Story' Delivers Love, Tragedy, and Heartfelt Emotion

I have fond memories of playing percussion in the pit of West Side Story during my junior year of high school. I remember as if it were yesterday the feel of the claves in my hands as I started the song "America" and the ring of the chimes as I struck them following "The Rumble." As I sat in Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, watching their production of West Side Story, I couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic as every song and line came back to me.

West Side Story brings a version of Romeo and Juliet to the West Side of New York City, where the Jets, an American street gang led by Riff, are trying to defend their home territory from the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Riff's best friend Tony falls in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria, and tries to make peace between the two gangs. The result is a delicate balance between tragedy and love, where either could end up winning.

Dutch Apple's West Side Story is an energetic production that is as enjoyable as it is emotional. It alternates between upbeat moments and tender moments, with a few powerful, dark moments that create an intense environment. The quick and seamless transitions from a lighthearted scene where the characters seem like traditional high school students having innocent fun to a darker scene where these same characters draw knives and guns makes the intense moments that much more intense.

The characters are just as opposing as the story itself, with the pure Maria, played by Alexis Semevolos, contrasting with a vibrant Anita, played by Zoe Raphael, and trustworthy Tony, played by Carver Duncan, contrasting with an always-up-for-the-challenge Bernardo, played by Chris Kane.

The entire cast demonstrates consistent vocal and acting talent, especially Raphael who dominates her role and at moments steals the show. But what really stands out in this production is the dancing. With high energy music numbers such as "America," West Side Story is a show that demands considerable dancing talent on top of the usual vocal and acting talent required of other less energetic musicals, and these performers don't disappoint. From the jazzy "Dance at the Gym" to the dreamy "Somewhere," the dancing is both dynamic and heartfelt.

Featuring a talented cast that sing and dance their hearts out, West Side Story at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre promises to be an enjoyable time. Oh, and the asparagus/ricotta ravioli at the buffet was one of the best things I've ever had to eat at Dutch Apple (aside from the desserts, of course!).

West Side Story plays at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre through September 19. For details and tickets, please visit www.dutchapple.com.

PRiMA Theatre to Present 'Children of Eden'

PRiMA Theatre will present Children of Eden on Sundays, September 6, 13, and 20 at 7:00pm at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster. Tickets to the show start at $22.00 and are available at primatheatre.org or by calling the box-office at (717) 327-5124.

Children of Eden is loosely based on the stories from the Book of Genesis. This heartfelt musical is a tale about the difficulties of parenting, breaking generational patterns, and the power of second chances. Experience this moving musical in concert staging within the magnificent St. James Church in Lancaster City.

Songs from Children of Eden include “Spark of Creation,” “Lost In The Wilderness,” and “Hardest Part of Love.”

The show loosely journeys from the creation story (Act I) to Noah and the flood (Act II). With the same principle actors playing the feature roles in each act, we see the semblance and patterns of each era's family struggles.

From the inspiration and curiosity of Eve, to the dead-fast love of Yonah and Japheth, Children of Eden reflects the heights and perils of humanity. Amidst this tale is a gorgeous score from the composer of Wicked, Stephen Schwartz.

'Once' Kicks off 2015-16 Broadway Season at Hershey Theatre

Tickets for this show are $25.00, $35.00, $38.00, $53.00, $68.00, $73.00, $78.00 and $83.00 (tax and applicable fees apply) and are available at Hershey Theatre Box Office. They can be charged by phone at 717-534-3405 and online at www.HersheyEntertainment.com or www.TicketMaster.com.

The set and costume design are by five time Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (The Coast of Utopia, Mary Poppins), lighting design is by Tony winner Natasha Katz (Aida, The Coast of Utopia), and sound design is by Clive Goodwin.

Once is the celebrated new musical based on the Academy Award-winning film. It tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together. Brought to the stage by an award-winning team of visionary artists and featuring an ensemble cast of gifted actor/musicians, Once is a musical celebration of life and love: thrilling in its originality, daring in its honesty... and unforgettable in every way.

Dutch Apple Will Present 'West Side Story'

It’s 1957, and summer is ending in the West Side of New York City. A dance at a local gym brings Tony and Maria together, and it's love at first sight! However, their love is threatened by a strong rivalry between two gangs: the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang, and the Jets, made up of ‘American’ boys. Maria is the sister to the leader of the Sharks, and Tony is an ex-member and the best friend of the leader of the Jets. Preparations are being made for one big rumble to settle the rivalry once and for all. Can Tony and Maria bridge the gap between the gangs and bring peace to their love before it’s too late? West Side Story is a modern take on the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet, and you can catch it at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre August 6 – September 19.

Fresh out of the roles of Dream Curly and Cord Elam in Dutch Apple's Oklahoma, Carver Duncan is hitting the stage as Tony, which he refers to as one of his dream roles (thanks to his parents who introduced him to the show when he was eight). Duncan also played Caleb in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, both at Dutch Apple and on the national tour. Maria will be played by Alexis Semevolos, who is reprising this role from a run at Dutch Apple’s sister theatre, Broadway Palm in Florida. Semevolos’ Off-Broadway credits include The Love Note, and regional credits include La Dispute and Macbeth at Hartford Stage, A Proper Place at Goodspeed Opera House, and Blood and Fire at Tru Voices.

Bernardo, leader of the Sharks and Maria’s brother, will be played by Dutch Apple alum, Chris Kane. Kane just performed in Ogunquit Playhouse’s production of Victor/Victoria and was seen at Dutch Apple last season as the heartthrob Link Larkin in Hairspary. He is also a three-time professional ballroom dance regional champion. Bernardo’s girl, Anita, will be played by Zoe Raphael, who is also reprising this role from the Broadway Palm production. Raphael’s favorite credits include the reading of A Proper Place for Goodspeed Opera House, Les Miserables at North Shore Music Theatre, Footloose at Maine State Music, and singing with the Boston Pops.

Dutch Apple’s production of West Side Story will be directed by Dean Sobon, who just finished directing Oklahoma! and also directed the national tours of Fiddler on the Roof and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He has a history with this show, performing in an international tour and two national tours. Sobon has worked for the Dutch Apple for 11 years now and is also an acting teacher for their Broadway Bound summer camps.

Samantha Hewes Cramer will be choreographing the production. She has worked with Dutch Apple since she was young, appearing on stage in Gypsy at the age of nine. Cramer is now excited to be on the other side of the stage with her work most recently being seen on the national tour of Memphis, The Musical as the Assistant to the Director, and she recently choreographed Crazy For You at Dutch Apple.

The score, by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, features songs such as "Tonight," "I Feel Pretty," "Maria," "(I Want to Be in) America," "Somewhere" and "One Hand, One Heart."

West Side Story will be at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre August 6 through September 19, 2015. Ticket prices range from $49 to $56 for meal and show with a special rate for groups of 16 or more. A limited number of show-only seats are available for $34. Call 717-898-1900 to make a reservation or order your tickets online at DutchApple.com.

'Annie' at Hershey Theatre is a Summer Treat for the Whole Family

It's hard to go through life without some kind of exposure to the classic musical Annie. Many people are familiar with the Tony-winning musical from its original Broadway production back in 1977. Even non-theatre fans have probably heard of the little red-headed orphan who belts out the iconic tune "Tomorrow." And the 2014 movie version starring Jamie Foxx mainstreamed the song "It's the Hard Knock Life," bringing awareness of the musical to a younger generation.

The national tour of Annie opened at the Hershey Theatre on Tuesday, July 21, and plays there through Sunday, July 26. Like a refreshing ice cream cone on a hot day, Annie is a great summer treat that is perfect for the whole family.

The story follows 11-year-old orphan Annie, played by Issie Swickle, who has her hopes set on finding her birth mother and father. The mean head of the orphanage Miss Hannigan, played by Lynn Andrews, strongly dislikes Annie (well, really all kids in general), and is disgusted when wealthy businessman Oliver ("Daddy") Warbucks, played by Gilgamesh Taggett, takes Annie under his wing for the Christmas holiday.

Swickle exudes confidence on the stage, and she brings a nice freshness to the title role while still preserving the classic image. Andrews dominates her character, and plays a convincing antagonist. Taggett is also quick to impress as his character balances authoritative business with fatherly love.

Garrett Deagon and Lucy Werner make up the comic duo of Rooster and Lily, respectively, and are entertaining in their roles, particularly when they team with Andrews for their performance of "Easy Street." Ashley Edler is a breath of fresh air as Warbucks' assistant Grace Farrell, and her voice is as sweet as her character.

The kids who make up the rest of the orphans put on quite the show and are a joy to watch, each bringing their own unique character to life. And of course I can't leave out one of the main stars of the show, Sandy, who brings a smile to everyone's face every time she trots on stage wagging her tail.

In full disclosure, Annie has never been a favorite musical of mine; however, I really enjoyed this production. The show is filled with a surprising amount of chuckles, for both adults and kids. I found myself laughing more than I expected, and even my 7-year-old son, who is usually Mr. Serious, was smiling and giggling throughout the show. One word of caution for parents... While the show is mostly very family friendly, there is a bit of mild language used, including several uses of the "D" word and a few "shut up"s.

This production of Annie absolutely does justice to the original, and anyone hoping to relive the familiar tunes and story they remember from years ago should be pleased with the show. Those experiencing the show for the first time can expect to enjoy a classic feel-good musical with catchy tunes and plenty of talent.

Annie plays at the Hershey Theatre through Sunday, July 26, 2015. For more details and ticket information, please visit www.hersheytheatre.com.

Hershey Theatre to Welcome Annie

Hershey Theatre is proud to welcome the new U.S. National Tour of Annie to the stage from Tuesday, July 21 through Sunday, July 26. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin for the 19th time, this production of Annie will be a brand new physical incarnation of the iconic Tony Award®-winning original.

Tickets for this show are $25.00, $30.00, $48.00, $53.00, $63.00, $68.00 and $73.00 (tax and applicable fees apply) and are available at Hershey Theatre Box Office. They can be charged by phone at 717-534-3405 and online at www.HersheyEntertainment.com or www.TicketMaster.com.

The original production of Annie opened April 21, 1977 at the Alvin Theatre and went on to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album and seven Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin). The show remains one of the biggest Broadway musical hits ever.

The beloved score for Annie includes “Maybe,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You” and the eternal anthem of optimism, “Tomorrow.”

This brand new production features a 25 member company: in the title role of Annie is Issie Swickle, a 9-year-old actress from Davie, FL, making her tour debut. Gilgamesh Taggett will star as Oliver Warbucks. In the role of Miss Hannigan is Lynn Andrews. Also starring in the tour are Ashley Edler as Grace, Garrett Deagon as Rooster, Lucy Werner as Lily and Allan Ray Baker as FDR. Sunny, a 4-year-old rescue terrier mix, stars as Sandy.

Little Theater of Mechanicsburg Brings a Board Game to Life in 'Clue: The Musical'

While much of the country is trying to solve the mystery of why there have been so many shark attacks in the Outer Banks this year, Little Theater of Mechanicsburg is busy trying to solve another mystery: Who killed Mr. Boddy?

LTM's production of Clue: The Musical brings the classic Parker Brothers board game to life, adding a unique twist where the audience can help figure out the who, what, and where to solve the mystery. The show is a combination of musical meets game, and the result is 90 minutes of lighthearted suspense, fun music, quality acting, and witty humor.

Upon being seated, audience members are given a clue sheet and pencil to keep track of clues throughout the performance. Early in the show, a pre-selected audience member goes on stage with Mr. Boddy to choose the three cards for that performance. The cards, which contain the solution to the mystery, are put in a large envelope marked confidential that stays on the stage for the duration of the performance, and the game begins.

The Who
Those familiar with the game will quickly recall the six characters: Mrs. Peacock (played by Stephanie Via), Professor Plum (played by Eric Mansilla), Miss Scarlet (played by Amber Zambrana), Mr. Green (played by Ryan Boyles), Mrs. White (played by Danny Sites), and Colonel Mustard (played by Ron Ross).

The What
"Wrench, candlestick, pipe, knife, revolver, rope." This phrase is repeatedly chanted throughout the performance, with the various characters using the weapons in different scenarios.

The Where
The kitchen, the billiard room, the ballroom, the lounge, the study, and the conservatory are depicted by six doors, which individually swing open when a room is in play.

Mr. Boddy (played by Matthew A. Robinson) acts as the host for the evening, presenting clues throughout the show to help solve the mystery. Following Mr. Boddy's murder, a detective (played by Roxanne Hennessy) also joins the scene. At the conclusion of the show, the envelope with the three cards is opened to reveal the murderer, weapon, and room, and audience members can compare their answers to the outcome of the performance. And there might just be a little twist at the end, too.

It's been a few years since I last visited Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg, and I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to get back! As the name implies, the theatre is small, creating a very intimate environment where audience members are just inches away from the action. It's the perfect setting for the interactive nature of Clue: The Musical, really making the audience a part of the game.

With six characters, six weapons, and six rooms in play, there are a total of 216 different ways the game could end, so each performance has a different outcome. I'd love to go back to see the show again and see how it ends at a different performance. However, if the rumors are true, the show is sold out for the remainder of its run through July 5. For more information, visit the LTM website at www.ltmonline.net.

Dutch Apple will Present Rodgers & Hammerstein's 'Oklahoma'

Oklahoma, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration, is set in a Western Indian territory (soon to be the brand new state of Oklahoma) where a cowboy named Curly and a farm girl named Laurey are stubborn, foolish, and in love. However, love is a bumpy ride with these two holding the reins, and the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre invites you to ride along from June 18 through August 1, 2015!

Christopher Lewis is returning to the Dutch Apple stage as Curly. He recently played Feuilly in Les Miserables at Dutch Apple, and he has worked at numerous theatres across the nation. Christopher refers to this as his “dream role” and dedicates this performance to his father, who has also played Curly.

Laurey, the target of Curly’s affection, will be played by Kayleen Seidl, who will be making her Dutch Apple debut right after closing a national tour of Guys & Dolls in which she portrayed Sarah Brown.

While Curly tries to invite Laurey to the box social, Jud, played by Justun Hart, throws his hat in the ring for her heart as well. Justun is just one of a handful of Oklahoma cast members who are returning to Dutch Apple after a successful national tour of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Others who are also just coming directly from the tour include Danielle Barnes, Ben Cramer, Carver Duncan, Avery Epstein, Kelsey Beckert, and Corinne Munsch (a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School).

Laurey’s friend Ado Annie, who is in a love triangle of her own, will be played by Theresa Walker. Theresa was last seen as Patsy in Crazy For You and Zaneeta in The Music Man at Dutch Apple. Theresa will be playing opposite of her “real life, real funny, leading man,” Craig Smith. Craig, who was last seen as Bela Zangler in Crazy For You, competes with Will Parker, played by Will Leonard, also fresh off of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers national tour, for Ado Annie’s hand. Will was also in the national tour of Fiddler on the Roof and is “ecstatic to be playing one of his dream roles.”

Laurey’s Aunt Ellar will be played by a familiar Dutch Apple face, Lisa Coday, who was last seen as Mrs. Strakosh in Funny Girl and Dinah in Dixie Swim Club. Andrew Carnes, Ado Annie’s father, will be played by Kirk Lawrence, who was last seen in Mid-Life 2! (The Crisis Continues) and as Mr. Potter in A Wonderful Life.

The cast will be under the direction of Dean Sobon, who directed the national tours of Fiddler on the Roof and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, as well as Crazy For You at Dutch Apple. Ford Haeuser, who worked with Dean during Crazy For You as Wyatt and Dance Captain, will be choreographer.

Complete with lasso tricks, can-can dances, a sneaky traveling salesman, and a brand new state, Oklahoma features classic Rodgers and Hammerstein songs such as "People Will Say We’re in Love", "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin'", "Oklahoma!", and "Surrey with the Fringe On Top".

Oklahoma will be at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre June 18 through August 1, 2015. Ticket prices range from $49 to $56 for meal and show with a special rate for groups of 16 or more. A limited number of show-only seats are available for $34. Call 717-898-1900 to make a reservation or order your tickets online at DutchApple.com.

2015 Tony Award Predictions

Hurray! It's Tony Awards weekend!!! I have Sunday's menu planned, the specialty cocktail selected, and most importantly, my picks for this year's winners.

Tonight my kids and I had fun going through the list of nominees and picking our favorites. Now that's what I call quality family time. :) My boys put some serious thought into their decisions, struggling over whether a play with a puppet sounds better than a play with the word "Dog" or "Wolf" in the title. Dutch Apple's Les Misérables is Sure to Impress

There were no empty chairs at empty tables in the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre this past weekend, and there's a good reason for that. Dutch Apple's production of the classic musical Les Misérables opened over the weekend and proved to be a top notch show filled with a stellar cast that is sure to impress.

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables follows prisoner 24601, a.k.a. Jean Valjean, as he is released from 19 years in prison. Upon his release, Valjean immediately gets caught stealing silver from the Bishop of Digne, but the Bishop's kindness encourages Valjean to seek a better life.

The show doesn't waste any time proving its talent. The opening "Prologue" features a strong ensemble of male voices, quickly followed by the impressive talent of Jacob Waid in the lead role of Jean Valjean. Waid's operatic voice is a perfect fit for this demanding role, and the audience is treated to an award-worthy performance from him. His vocals are impeccable, as demonstrated in songs like "Bring Him Home," and his acting talent is equally impressive. Also quick to impress with vocal talent is Amanda Kuchinski, who plays Fantine. She showcases her flawless voice in her beautiful performance of "I Dreamed a Dream." Her acting isn't quite on par with her singing, and if I'm being really critical I wasn't a fan of the wigs that she wore, but her voice is so good that it's easy to look past this.

In the role of Javert, Adam Clough provides a performance reminiscent of Russell Crowe in the 2012 movie version of Les Misérables, with the only major difference being that Clough is actually good. Other notable performances include John Anker Bow in the role of Thernardier and Maya Naff as Eponine. Both Bow and Naff have solid acting talent with the voices to match. Additionally, the ensemble as a whole is extremely talented, and the company numbers are a highlight of the show. Supporting cast members also provide quality performances that aren't quite as impressive as those of Waid, but nonetheless are good fits for the show.

While the talented cast of this production far outweighs the show's weaknesses, there are a few areas that don't quite live up to the high quality that the overall production provides. For starters, the set -- while visually appealing -- is extremely loud. Often during a quiet start of a solo or song, the set is loudly rolled on or off the stage, providing an unwelcome distraction. Another downfall to the show is the orchestra. With a small orchestra consisting only of trumpet, trombone, reeds, and percussion, the show features a mix of live and recorded music. The recorded music is often a welcome treat due to an unacceptable number of missed notes by the live musicians, most consistently the trumpet player. With a cast as talented as this one, it's unfortunate that the orchestra isn't of comparable quality. But in spite of its few weaknesses, the show comes through and ultimately treats the audience to a spectacular production.

At the end of the day, Dutch Apple's production of Les Misérables is a not-to-be missed performance full of talent. Les Miz veterans will be pleased with the quality of this show, while first-timers will be given a first-rate introduction to the renowned musical.

Les Misérables plays at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre May 7 through June 13, 2015. Additional details and ticket information can be found at www.dutchapple.com.

'Chess The Musical' Comes to Lancaster

PRiMA is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the musical Chess with their upcoming main stage production. The show plays Sundays, May 17, 24 & 31, at 7:00 p.m. at Willow Valley Communities Cultural Center Theatre.

By the composers of Mamma Mia and the lyricist of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, this intense story is woven together in what Time Magazine calls "one of the best rock scores ever produced." Featuring songs like "Anthem" and "One Night in Bangkok," Chess has a cult following for its classical music mixed with pop rock.

When the original concept album of Chess was produced, the Cold War was not far from the minds of the American public. The story follows Russian and American chess-playing rivals (loosely based on characters surrounding the historical Bobby Fischer) and their mutual love interest, Florence Vassy, whose estranged father is either imprisoned or dead at the hands of the Russian army.

PRiMA’s production focuses on telling the story of Chess through a contemporary lens, as international tensions continue to be relevant, 30 years after the musical was written. “These political rivalries mirror the interplay on a personal level, as characters use each other to their own ends, destroying themselves and each other as they progress,” says PRiMA’s Executive Producer and Director of Chess, Mitch Nugent. "We see the damage done when people use each other like pawns, but also that even the person who’s made a million mistakes always has the option to choose a more selfless path."

Tickets ($22, $38, $50) are available at primatheatre.org or 717.327.5124.

(L-R) Jay Poff, Bethany Swiontek, and Bryon Smith will star in PRiMA's upcoming production of Chess.

Stay Tuned!

There's an event coming up in NYC next week that's held annually by the Commercial Theater Institute. It's a 3-day course that focuses entirely on producing theatre. Networking opportunities, presentations by Broadway producers, panels covering various areas of producing... Sounds amazing, right? Well I haven't even told you the best part... I'M GOING TO IT!!!

Can you tell I'm just a little bit excited? I feel like a little kid gearing up for a trip to Disneyland.

Remember back in January when I shared my goal/dream to produce my own show(s)? I know I haven't posted much more about that, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten about it. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Over the past few months I've been busy taking steps to get this process started and make my dream a reality. And attending the CTI 3-Day Producing Intensive is just one of these steps.

Now, I should probably tell you that I'm not a very patient person. I'm working on it, but for the most part when I set my mind to something I want it to happen immediately. So these past few months have been absolute torture for me. As more and more ideas for new and buzz-worthy musical theatre experiences pile up in my head, all I've wanted to do is make them happen. But something like a new musical with unique and innovative aspects doesn't happen overnight. Of course I knew this going into this. But that doesn't make it any easier to sit back and wait for things to fall into place.

I'm really hoping to come back from New York next weekend with a clear path of how to get from point A to point Z. Actually, I might be at point B right now, but I'm still a long way away from point Z. Anyway, I'm hoping this CTI program answers many of my questions, aligns me with some people who are on the same page as I am, and gives me the direction I need to get my ideas on a stage. While I've spent hours upon hours slowly inching toward my dream of producing, my hope is that the CTI program is the boost I need to really send Row L Seat 1 Productions on its way to producing unique musical theatre experiences.

So for now, all I can say is stay tuned! I hope to have some exciting updates for you soon. As always, thanks for reading and for your continued support!

~Kim

How can I keep calm when I'm going to the CTI 3-Day Intensive in just ONE WEEK?!?!

'Funny Girl' Brings Ziegfeld's Brightest Star to the Dutch Apple

Funny Girl took the world by storm as a Broadway musical in 1964 starring Barbra Streisand, was adapted into a movie musical in 1968 where Barbra reprised her role, and is now hitting the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre’s stage from March 26th to May 2nd, 2015. It’s a production full of big musical numbers as well as big personalities!

Funny Girl is the true story of Fanny Brice, who ruled Broadway as Ziegfeld’s brightest star and brought the house down as an outrageous comedienne and singer. Fanny had to fight for her fame, and after her rise to stardom she falls in love with a handsome gambler, but his luck does not quite hold up. You will hear the songs "Don’t Rain On My Parade," "I’m The Greatest Star" and the song made popular by Barbra Streisand, "People."

Portraying the lead role of Fanny Brice is Emerson College graduate, Anna Baker. Professionally, she has been featured regionally in New York and Tennessee, and her favorite roles include Fiona in Shrek the Musical and Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun.

Galloway Stevens is back on the Dutch Apple stage as Nick Arnstein, the handsome gambler that Fanny falls for. Audiences loved Galloway as Lank Hawkins in Crazy For You, and he starred in several of Dutch Apple’s other productions such as The Drowsy Chaperone, 9 to 5 and The King and I. Galloway describes this role as “an unforeseen achievement that fills him with such pride.”

Mrs. Brice, Fanny’s mother, will be played by Kathi Osborne, who has been in over 30 productions with Prather Entertainment Group. Kathi has been performing since age nine and has been around the world in over 500 productions. Playing Eddie, Fanny’s dance director, is Christopher Russell. You may remember Christopher as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, Alex in I Love A Piano, and more recently, Harry in Crazy For You. Mrs. Brice’s three friends, Mrs. Strakosh, Mrs. Meeker, and Mrs. O’Malley will be played by Lisa Coday, Megan Gill, and Megan Orlowski respectively. This will be Lisa’s fourth show straight at the Dutch Apple. Most recently, she was Dinah in Dixie Swim Club. Megan Gill, a 2014 Wichita State University graduate, will be making her Dutch Apple debut! Megan Orlowski was recently seen as Vera in Crazy For You and is also a published author in the Young Adult genre.

Funny Girl will be at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre March 26 through May 2, 2015. Ticket prices range from $49 to $56 for meal and show with a special group discount for groups of 16 or more. A limited number of show-only seats are available for $34. Call 717-898-1900 to make a reservation or order your tickets online at DutchApple.com.

Schoolhouse Rock Live at Dutch Apple is the Perfect Cure for Spring Fever

I don't know about you, but I've had enough of all this cold, ice, cold, snow, cold, wind, and more cold! Spring just can't come fast enough in my house. While I love my children dearly, I think one more game of Go Fish, Uno, or Checkers might just send me the over the edge. Fortunately, I managed to escape the house with my almost-5-year-old son for a few hours over the weekend to catch a performance of Schoolhouse Rock Live! at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, and let me just say that it was the perfect cure for our spring fever!

There was so much to love about this show. First, it's fun. Second, it's educational. And third, it's fun AND educational at the same time! Kids will enjoy the energy and humor of the characters so much that they won't even realize that they're learning (shhhh, don't tell them!).

So what will they learn? Well, with 11 different songs covering topics from nouns to multiplication to space, they'll learn a good bit. Even I (re)learned a thing or two that I had forgotten from my elementary school days.

Based on the 1970s cartoon, Schoolhouse Rock Live! features songs like "Unpack Your Adjectives" to teach various school lessons.
With songs like "Conjunction Junction" and "Interplanet Janet," the material is most appropriate for students in second, third or fourth grade, who are probably learning these very lessons. However, kids older and younger will also enjoy many aspects of the show. Even my pre-schooler was laughing and clapping along to the songs.

Dutch Apple thought of everything when planning for this show, from the kid-friendly buffet to the activities in the program. The buffet featured items such as chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, corn dogs, pizza, and applesauce. The program included activities like a maze, word search, and connect the dots. At the performance I attended, the cast even did a Q&A with the kids right after the show. And with a running time of just a little over an hour (including a 15-minute intermission), the show is the perfect length for kids.

If you're looking for a great way to get the kids out of the house for a few hours, look no further than Schoolhouse Rock Live!. The show plays at Dutch Apple through March 20. For more information and tickets, please visit www.dutchapple.com.
